Installation

You can install Davar4 from a single installation executable setup file.

Davar4 is installed according to Microsoft windows specifications. Therefore, a suggestion is made to install the program file defaults (exe, dll and chm help) to the \Program Files\Davar4 directory. All data (modules, pictures, audio and configuration files) are installed (without choice) to the \ProgramData\Davar4 directory. If you have WindowsXP, data modules are installed to the \Documents and Settings\AllUsers\Davar4 directory.

You can select a different directory for the installation of the program files (e.g. C:\Davar4\), however, the program data will be installed as described above.

You can still modify very easy an installation of Davar4 to make it portable, see below.

1) Installation from a single installation setup file

You can get the latest installation file from the Davar4 web page (contact info).

After you run the installation file, you can select the path where the program will be installed. A default path for Davar4 will be suggested ("C:\Program Files\Davar4"). Setup will create an icon on your computer desktop with a menu with start and uninstall icons.

Davar4 data will be placed in the following directory:

SystemDrive:\ProgramData\Davar4 (Windows7, Windows 8/8.1, Windows 10)

or

SystemDrive:\Documents and Settings\AllUsers\Davar4 (Windows XP)

The following subfolders will then be created:

\audio\    [folder for audio MP3 + audio index files AIX]
\data\     [folder for all modules - DBK, LEX, DIC, DWR, NOT, verse list files VL and PDF documents]
\language\   [folder for language localization files LNG]
\fonts\    [Hebrew and Greek TTF files. Only if you check this option - when planning to move the installed program to another PC]
\mdk\   [folder where the module development kit MDK and examples are installed]
\picture\   [folder for pictures of the Browser Picture and a file for the copyright.nfo]
\temp\   [folder for temporary files, downloaded zip modules, etc.]

The distribution installation file includes only the basic modules. Other modules can be obtained using download manager or the modules can be downloaded from the website and using the installation tool or you can manually unzip the files to the \data\ directory of the Davar4 program data.

2) Portable features of Davar4

It is possible to still create a portable version of the program even if the Davar4 data files are placed in a different location than the program files. When you create a portable version according to the following steps, be sure that you have computer rights to write/delete/run files in the location that you want to use.

Step 1) Copy the program files directory to the media where you want to create the portable version.

For example, copy the complete \Davar4 directory from \Program Files\Davar4 path to USB Flash, and you will have USBFLASH:\Davar4 with all the program files present.

Step 2) Add all the files and subfolders from SystemDrive:\ProgramData\Davar4\ to the newly created USBFLASH:\Davar4 folder.

After this operation, you will have on the USB created the following folder \Davar4\ with the program files. This folder will then show the subfolders \data, \language, \audio, \picture ... etc. It will be recognized as portable mode when the exe file is ran - the title of the main window will show the "portable mode" label.

If you plan to move Davar4 to another PC, it is highly recommended to also install the Hebrew and Greek TTF font files. The fonts will be placed into the \fonts\ folder and you can install them, if necessary, from this folder on the second PC.

3) First start of Davar4

When the program starts for the first time you may see some extra windows and messages:

New updates message. This windows will notify you on the start if a new version of the program has been released. You can customize this feature in Options / Other program options.

Tip of the day. This window displays important information that will help you learn to use Davar4 more effectively. It is highly recommended that you read these tips.

If the configuration file (davar.cfg) was not found, you can look for information about missing configuration. The default file davar.cfg is then created and the present configuration is saved when the program ends.

NOTE: If you have problems with the program, it is recommended that you delete the (or backup) davar.cfg file and start Davar4 again using the default configuration.

4) Uninstallation of Davar4

You may run the file Uninstall.exe which begins the procedure to uninstall. Another way is to select uninstall from the control panels or from the Start menu.

IMPORTANT: You will be asked about which data files to delete when you unistall Davar4. Select the files that you wish to remove very carefully to prevent the loss of other important files (e.g. user notes and your own created modules)!

5) Adding modules to Davar4

There are many more modules that you can manually download from the Davar4 website.

The recommended way on how to get and install the modules is built in the Download Manager. You can select from the officially released modules according to the module languages, date of release and name of module or type. You can specify the download server located closest to you.

You can install the downloaded files to Davar4 by using the Module Installation Tool that is already integrated in the program. It will display information about the zipped module package and install (unzip) it into the \data\ folder of the program.

If you prefer to work manually, just unzip the module file (DBK, LEX, DIC, DWR, NOT) to the \data folder, typically found in C:\ProgramData\Davar4\. Do not create any subfolder inside the \data folder!

Unzip the picture packages into the \picture\ folder. You can then create here subfolders to organize the pictures by groups.

The audio mp3 files and the audio indexes (AIX) are copied to the \audio\ folder (keep the same directory structure as the one stored in the zip archive).

Run Davar4 when all the operations are completed.

Depending on your library.cfg file, after the program starts the new modules will be placed in predefined positions in the library tree. If a module is not included in the library.cfg file, it will be placed in the "root" of the module folder (e.g. in "Books" root). You can configure the module tree in the Library manager.
